Context

Peoplebox's core is a set of HR workflows — goals, performance reviews, surveys — each with its own state machine, permissions, and audit trail, used by enterprise orgs at scale.

The problem

New modules kept re-solving the same problems — auth, permissions, job queues — and inconsistent patterns were slow to extend and hard to trust.

How it was solved
  1. 01

Standardised REST contracts and ActiveRecord models so every module shares one contract.

  2. 02

Moved long-running work to Sidekiq so responses stay fast and retries are safe.

  3. 03

Designed schemas first — migrations and indexes as the contract, code second.

  4. 04

Turned production incidents into refactors, not patches, so reliability compounds.

The detail worth mentioning
The schema is the contract. When the data model is right, the API, the queue, and the permissions all fall out of it.
Outcome

6product areas

Goals, Reviews, Surveys, HRIS, IDPs, and reporting on one service layer

  • Shipped and maintained workflows across six product areas.
  • Reusable service patterns replaced one-off module code.
  • Reliability improved as incidents became refactors instead of patches.
